Ever since her childhood, Yaocheng Jillian Yu has been extensively involved in the world of music. Her musical studies began at the age of three.
With a strong presence and an undeniable energy, Jillian’s career has taken her performances all over the US, as well as Europe, Asia and Russia. Jillian is a winner of various competitions and prizes. She was the San Francisco Conservatory's Concerto Competition Winner for 2008, and also selected as the featured soloist for her graduation at SFCM. Jillian was selected as the Midwest Regional Winner for the Music Teachers National Association, and scholarship winner for both Fresno Music Club and the Evanston Music Club. She was a semi-finalist in the 2007 Frank Bowen Flute Competition. In 2005, She was given a position in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Jillian was also a participant in the Colorado College Summer Music Festival and the National Repertory Orchestra.
Jillian is a graduate of Northwestern University - School of Music and San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has studied with world-renowned flute players: Timothy Day, Walfrid Kujala, Jill Felber, and Elizabeth Mann. Jillian also has musical influences from Jeannie Baxtressor, Mark Sparks, Paula Robison, and Keith Underwood. Jillian is currently a substitute for the New World Symphony and is also a performer and educator in the Chicagoland area.
While most of her training was in classical music, over the years, Jillian has developed a strong skillset in he genre of jazz and improvisation. She has collaborated with many local artists in the major musical cities of San Francisco, Orlando and Chicago. Jillian was previously a member of Manicato Musica (Latin/Reggae/Funk) and Valerie Orth Band (Indie Rock). She has collaborated with Meli Morgan (Celtic/Latin/Rock), Luis Feliciano, Crosswinds (Latin Jazz), Alfredo Gomez, MamaKoatl, Brian Pettis and Melissa Vallejo. In 2009, Jillian played on the Worship Team of InterVarsity's Urbana Conference in America’s Center Convention Complex, St Louis for a student body of 18,000 .
When not performing or teaching, Jillian enjoys salsa dancing, watching TLC, taking care of her exotic pets, exploring different restaurants of Chicago, and running around exploring the city.
